Orthotics

What are Orthotics?
One of the main functions of your feet is to absorb shock as the body's weight shifts while walking. Runners in particular exert much greater forces on their feet than those generated by simple walking. This can lead to more severe injuries, such as sprained ankles, shin splints and even fractures and over time stresses on the feet can deform them. Over time the arches in the feet collapse and change the shape of the feet. When this occurs you are unable to absorb shock as effectively when you walk which may cause pain in not just your feet but knees, hips, back and neck pain. By helping control the motion of the feet and support the weight of the body evenly, orthotics help to align the spine correctly and prevent these conditions from occurring.

There are many different types of orthotics which are suited for different ages and lifestyle. How do you know what works for you? That is where an assessment of the feet for the orthotics is done by a computerized gait scan where both static and kinetic measurements are taken and a 3-D image of the foot is created. With this image, a laser is used to custom manufacture the orthotic to your feet.
